What is cohousing?
Cohousing is a Danish design innovation that has enjoyed a slow adoption in the U.S. over the past 20 years. According to the Cohousing Association of the U.S., approximately 114 cohousing communities are active, with an unknown number in discussion, pre-design or development. In Minnesota, according to the cohousing.org website, there are two completed cohousing communities and four in various stages of development or retrofitting. "Community in the Cities" (CitC) is one of those 'in development'.
Cohousing is a form of "intentional community" that emphasizes community interaction, resource sharing and land preservation, and de-emphasizes the automobile, the 'McMansion' and isolation. It is a living arrangement where private residences (12-30 or so) are oriented around a common open area and a shared Community building. Cohousing residents are proactive in maintaining their viable, friendly neighborhoods in which residents cooperate, socialize, share and thrive.
